What Is a Texas State Inspection

Texas law requires most vehicles to undergo an annual safety inspection to ensure they meet the state's safety standards. During the inspection, key systems like brakes, lights, tires, and steering are checked to ensure everything is functioning properly. Vehicles that fail to meet these requirements will need repairs before passing.

Barebones Automotive has been providing professional services since 2011, so you can trust that our family-owned shop will get the job done right. We’ll ensure your vehicle is inspected thoroughly; if any repairs are necessary, we’ll explain everything clearly before starting work.

What’s Changing Starting in 2025

Starting in 2025, significant changes are coming to Texas state inspections. As of January 1, 2025, most vehicle safety inspections in Texas will be eliminated for non-commercial vehicles:

Inspection Program Replacement Fee

  • All non-commercial vehicles will be subject to a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee, which is paid when registering a vehicle with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • For new vehicles purchased in Texas, you will pay an initial $16.75 inspection program replacement fee to cover the first two years.

Emissions Inspections Are Still Here to Stay

The recent decision to phase out state inspections in Texas highlights the growing importance of emissions testing for vehicle owners. Emissions inspections will still be required in 17 heavily populated and urbanized counties, including Denton County.

The Texas Emissions Test, also known as a smog test, is a regulatory procedure that monitors and controls vehicle emissions to ensure cleaner air quality and less pollution. Vehicles manufactured more than 24 years ago, diesel-powered vehicles, motorcycles, and electric vehicles are exempt from emissions testing.
